Celebrating the official start of the Chinese New Year
It was the Portuguese who gave us the name Peking. They were the first European country to make contact with China in modern times, circa 1550. Their translation of North capital, now Beijing, was Pequim and this, in turn, translated from Portuguese into ‘Pekin’ in English.
The Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar and has a flux of between 12 and 13 months. It always falls on the 1st lunar month of the year, which is between 21st Jan to 20th Feb. It is time to celebrate, honour our ancestors, send out wishes & generally feast for 15 days up until the full moon.
Our resident musician Andrew Hurst will be playing authentic Chinese instruments to help create the atmosphere and Peter Vaughan will tell you more about the food you are eating. Chop sticks will be provided but other cutlery will be available as well!
